Wonderland - Design Development
Proposal Feedback & Action & Plan (Week 4)
Feedback
Although my proposal has been submitted in the fourth week, because all the lecturers feel that the project in my proposal is not innovative, I need to revise the project again. In the beginning, I originally wanted to do the original Alice in Wonderland story, and let the audience experience the original story as their own. Now I will change the setting of the story, especially the ending must be twisted from the original story.
Action & Plan
I want to make the VR experience richer, and I plan to add more interactive content. My approach is to turn the story into a puzzle game. At the same time, I want to set the background of the story as a combination of steampunk and cyberpunk, because I like the art style of cyberpunk and the setting of steampunk. In Wonderland, everything would be unreasonable, so I think a combination of steampunk and cyberpunk is acceptable.

Story Synopsis
There are four doors in the hall, and each door is a different scene. In the beginning, there is only one key to the first door. You need to solve puzzles in every scene and get the next door key. The objective is to help the cat to get back its magical heart, so it can turn back into humans. When the cat turns back into a human, he can help you to leave this wonderland. Cats will appear in every scene to guide the player on how to decrypt it. The first gate is to a garden. You need to shrink to get the gear and grow to put the gear in the belonging place. So the sun will shine on the flowers then they have the energy to sing and bloom to show the key hidden in the flowers. The second is the key to the tea party. The Hatter will tell you that the cat’s heart is at the Queen of Heart’s castle. The Queen of Hearts key is hidden in his hat, but the mechanism of his hat is broken. You need to shrink and fix it. After repairing it, the key could not be found. After that, Hatter suddenly remembered that he hid the keys in the teapot. Once you find the key, you can return to the hall. Open the 3rd door to the Castle of the Queen of Hearts and you can see that there are many roses, you can paint them white and then poker soldiers will catch you in jail. After that, you need to escape and go to the place where the cat's magic heart was placed and get the magic heart back. Then you escape from there. Once you are out and you give the heart back to the cat, it becomes human. He built a door with magic, and you opened it back to your world. Then you realized you were in a mental hospital.
Flowchart
Storyboard
The story will appear in 6 scenes and 3 main levels. The 6 scenes will be Field that met the rabbit, Hall with 4 doors, Garden (Level 1), Tea Party (Level 2), Castle (Level 3), and Mental Hospital.
Since there are so many scenes and I need to create all of these scenes' assets, I think I should narrow down the scope of work first because I don't think I can finish all of these scenes within this semester.
In the end, I decided to first set the goal to complete the second scene this semester, which is the tea party scene. At the same time, I will do modeling and level design, etc. But the most important thing is that the whole story flow can go smoothly.
Character Design
Due to the time being very rushed, I created characters design to show the art style of the story. The below characters are Cat, Hatter, Soldier, and Queen of Heart. I can sure the first 3 characters I have to create as definitely will appear in the story scene. However, the Queen of Heart I was considering whether need it or not because she just appears in the story scene in a few sec.
Scene Design
Storyboard Although I drew the entire scene, the details of the scene are still uncertain. Therefore, I am still in the stage of exploring the scene design, and these scenes are relatively certain (especially Hall's scene).
Change Concept & Art Style (Week 11)
Reason of Changing
In the 2 rd formative assessment, I originally intended to have guests test the flow of my story, and I wanted the guest to give me feedback and ideas on the flow of the story. However, the guest chose not to test my process, and instead focused this formative assessment on the concept and art style of the project.
The comments my guests gave me made me think more deeply about the reasons behind my story (eg why did Alice enter Wonderland; why did Alice find herself mentally ill at the end; what does Wonderland represent in Alice's mind? Trauma?).
After receiving feedback and comments from the guest, I have a new direction and view on the concept and art style of this project. So I decided to change my original project concept and art style in week 11, and document the details of these new ideas in a new pitch deck (for presentation to lecturers in week 12). Other than that, regarding my art style, the guest felt that although I used cyberpunk and steampunk styles, they still looked very generic. So it was suggested that I explore the art style in the direction of my own painting style.
New Concept & Art Style
Based on the guest's feedback, I started thinking about why Alice would be neurotic. While exploring what makes Alice neurotic, I stumbled upon Alice In Wonderland Syndrome (AWIS). Therefore, I came out with a new concept which is about AWIS. Gives everyone the opportunity to experience the symptoms of AWIS. And experience the world of Alice In Wonderland.
At the same time, I wanted to use a painting style to make the art style of this project special. Based on the guest's suggestion, "try using your own drawing style to become the artistic style of this project". I'm not good at drawing, so my drawing style is like that of a primary school student. So I going to go in the direction of the drawing style of primary school students, which is the color pencil style.
New Details
Story Synopsis
Players play as Alice who suffers from Alice in Wonderland Syndrome. One day, Alice was playing alone in the woods. Suddenly her Alice in Wonderland Syndrome happened and she fell into Wonderland. In Wonderland, players need to collect all of Alice's senses, namely time, perception, hearing, and sight. Once the player has collected all her senses, Alice will realize that she is already in her bedroom.
Flowchart
Storyboard
The story will appear in 7 scenes and 3 main levels. The 7 scenes will be Woods that met the rabbit, Time zone that met the cat, Hall with 3 doors, Tea Party (door 1), The Flowers (door 2), Rabbit House (Level 3), and Alice's bedroom.
It was week 13 by the time I finished this, so I needed to step up. Luckily I worked out some of the interaction design while prototyping the first concept, and I had some 3D models that I could reuse from earlier or when prototyping the last one. So I'm not completely starting over with prototyping. So I think I can still finish 2 scenes this semester, The Flowers and Tea Party (because the assets from the last prototype can be used).
Character Design
Character Design I used the character designs I made in the previous concept and simply changed their outfits. The colors will still change, depending on the overall color mood of the story.
Item Design
The item models in the project will have this rather unusual and odd shape as the art style.
Scene Design
Since my storyboard divides the world into a normal world and a Wonderland world, I want to use two different styles to present them. Regarding the normal world, I want to make the scene close to the real one (pictured below). Then in Wonderland, everything looked cartoony or unreal, so I started exploring different art styles and color moods.
In terms of Wonderland's art style, I initially planned to use the texture of the color pencil as the art style of my project, but after trying the effect I felt that it was not ideal so I decided not to use it (no screenshots). After that, I also tried the watercolor texture art style, but the result was still not very good, so I decided not to use it.
Finally, I tried the toon art style and it looks nice. I also tried the difference with and without outlines. Both of them look nice but I think the outline looks special.
